History :
Before the Roman Conquest, our region was a part of the Leuques territory (a celtic tribe dwelling in the south of Lorraine).
It was in the 7th century, with the founding of the first female monastry of Lorraine at the summit of the Saint-Mont (near Remiremont), that the history of Vagney and its neighbourring villages started to be written.
The land was then put to use by the monks who organized the communities of inhabitants into parishes. This gave birth to Ban de Vagney, one of the biggest amongst the fifty-two Bans in the area of Remiremont. The inhabitants of Ban de Vagney were also the subjects of the Duke of Lorraine.
In 1766, at the death of Stanislas Leszczinski, the last duke of Lorraine, the inhabitants of Ban de Vagney became French. The revolution of 1789 put in place a new administrative organisation and the area of Vagney then consisted of 10 communes. It was only in the 19th century that the activities became more diverse (textile industry, excavation of granite).
Just a quick note : in 1902 a "walking commitee" was created in Vagney, a forerunner of the tourist office, one of the first in France...
