Ways of the past

In travelling  through our villages or in leaving the beaten track, you will perhaps come to see certain edifices or monuments which have stood witness to the often painful events of our past.

The cross monuments sometimes indicate a former plague burial site improvised during the course of the Thirty Year War. The oldest one dates back to 1602. Other crosses have been erected in honour of the soldiers killed in combat during the liberation of 1944.

The cross of the year 2000 contains in its foundations a bottle with the names of all the inhabitants of Le Haut du Tôt (an original way to mark the new millennium).

In the sector of Basse sur le Rupt, at "Piquante Pierre", stands a monument in the memory of the civilian resistance groups during the war. At "Croix des Moinats" a memorial pays a hommage to the moroccan soldiers, who helped to free our region.

The churches also suffered during the last war. As a result, they now have beautiful stained glass windows made by a famous master (Gabriel Loire), which have replaced the originals.

For the record : the church of Le Haut du Tôt, the highest parish in the Vosges, was entirely constructed by its inhabitants in one year (1832)!

In Gerbamont, don't miss the chapel (18th century) and its beautiful classified altar.

Other constructions show a very rich former agricultural activity. Numerous typical farms are dotted around; some still have their bread ovens or even the generator in a small hut down the hills.

Not far from Ban de Vagney, a walk at "Saint Mont" allows you to rewind back to the source of our history.

We haven't forgotten our fifteen minutes of fame with the film set, in june 1965, of the famous Robert Enrico film "Les Grandes Gueules". The square in Vagney and the large fir trees of Cellet will always remember the presence of Bourvil, Lino Ventura and Marie Dubois
